Overwatch 2 Addresses Controversy Over Lilith Moira Pricing

Overwatch 2 recently released a statement about the controversy surrounding the Moira Lilith skin. While it wasn’t an apology, Overwatch 2 claims it learned from the incident, and will try to provide more ways to obtain popular skins like it in the future.

Rise of Darkness, the seventh season of Overwatch 2, introduced tons of new Halloween-themed cosmetics, including several Diablo 4 crossover skins. However, many Overwatch 2 players were upset to find that Lilith Moira and Inarius Pharah–two of the most desired skins in the season–were locked behind the $40 Ultimate Battle Pass bundle, and could not be obtained any other way.

In a recent Director’s Take about Season 7 so far, Overwatch 2 game director Aaron Keller talked about the controversy. Near the end of the blog post, he acknowledged the anger of the community and admitted the philosophy behind putting the skins in the Ultimate Battle Pass bundle was intentional. He then went on to say the team would be making sure there were other ways to obtain popular Overwatch 2 skins like Inarius Pharah and Lilith Moira in the future.

Here is the exact quote from Keller’s Overwatch 2 blog post about Lilith Moira:

“Speaking of our shop... There was a bit of a controversy at the start of this season with the placement of our latest Moira skin in the Ultimate Battle Pass bundle. Some players felt like it was the best skin of the season and were upset that the only way to obtain the skin was to purchase one of our highest-priced bundles. We do sell an Ultimate Battle Pass bundle every season with legendary skins in it and will continue to do so. However, the lesson that we’re taking away from this moment is to make sure that we provide more ways to acquire some of our most popular skins.”

Interestingly enough, Lilith Moira is available for individual purchase in countries like Brazil, where it is illegal to sell items exclusively in a bundle. While there is no such law in the United States, it is possible Overwatch 2 may start making sure to sell similar big-ticket skins separately to avoid future outrage. That said, it seems intent to continue putting Legendary skins in the Ultimate Battle Pass bundle, so players will have to see what Overwatch 2 does in its future seasons to be sure.

In the same blog post, Keller also revealed Overwatch 2 is looking at the Battle Pass, and even claimed making changes to it was a top priority. The team has been developing a “new take” on the Overwatch 2 Battle Pass, which players can expect to hear about early next year.

Overwatch 2 will be skipping its next bi-weekly Developer's Take blog post because of BlizzCon the same week.
